Aberdovey Golf Club welcomed 23 junior golfers for the 2026 Junior Open today, with competitors producing an impressive standard of golf in good playing conditions. There were some great performances across both the boys’ and girls’ competitions.

In the girls’ event, Aliyah Summers of Bridgnorth claimed the Gross title with a fabulous level par round of 74, while Lucy Hurst of Aberdovey secured the Nett prize with an excellent score of 67.

The boys’ competition was closely contested, with Ifan Owens of Caernarfon enjoying an outstanding day to win both the Gross (75) and Nett (65) titles. Keoni Maguire of Welshpool finished runner-up in both categories, while Lilleshall Hall’s George Braine took third place in the Nett competition with a score of 68.

Sunday 12th July

Another great day of golf was enjoyed by all at today’s Mixed Greensomes Open, where 56 pairs took to the course in continuing very warm conditions. The weather certainly brought out some spectacular scoring, with competition fierce from start to finish.

Congratulations to Susan Stout and Philip Sloan from Lee Park and Bootle, who took top honours with a superb performance to claim 1st place with 47 points.

Runners-up were Lisa & Mark Emery from Moseley, who delivered a strong round to finish just behind the winners with 45 points.

In third place, were Jan & Rhys English from Whitchurch with 44 points.

And that’s a wrap for our run of July Opens! Fantastic scoring and full fields of competitors have made it a fabulous few days of golf at the club. The atmosphere has been brilliant, and feedback from players has been extremely positive throughout.

A huge thank you goes to our dedicated team of staff and our volunteer starters whose hard work and enthusiasm (despite the heat!) have made the week run so smoothly – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Saturday 11th July 

The Men’s Individual Open took place today in searing summer heat, but the 144-strong field rose to the challenge with some excellent scoring on display despite the sweltering temperatures.

1^st – Chris Brannan (Towneley Golf Club) 43 points

2^nd – Charley Thomas (Moseley Golf Club) 42 points

3^rd – Matthew Leonard (Hollywood Golf Club) 42 points

4^th – Steve Willis (Ludlow Golf Club) 41 points

5^th – Cameron Snook (Rugby Golf Club) 40 points

Feedback on the condition of the course was unanimously strong, despite the heatwave.

A superb day of golf marked this year’s Women’s Teams of 4 Open on Friday 10th July. The sun shone down and the course was enjoyed by all.

Congratulations go to the winning team from Chester, Eaton and Stockport Golf Clubs, made up of Kay Skinner, Sue Ratcliffe, Dee Leary, and Liz Newton, who posted an impressive 89 points to take the top prize.

Hot on their heels were the runners-up with 88 points, featuring a home team combination of Val Franklin, Jill Williams, Maria Worton and Ceri Rigby.

Third place went to Beth Cambidge, Sara Shepherd, Jenny Leonard and Sandy Ward from Shifnal, Oswestry and Edgbaston with 86 points.

Fourth place, scoring 85 points, consisted of Jo Thomas (Padeswood & Buckley), Samantha Masters (Wrag Barn), Mary Upson (Aberdovey) and Carol Howell (Broome Manor).

Two’s sweep: Sue Ratcliffe (Carden Park), Anna Marie Dutton (The Wiltshire), Sarah Clarke (Oswestry).

Glorious sunshine welcomed a full field of 160 competitors to today’s Seniors’ Betterball Open, creating the perfect conditions for a fantastic day of golf and great scoring.

Peter Drinkwater and Mark Duckworth from Heyrose Golf Club emerged as the overall winners to top a very competitive leaderboard with 45 points.

Finishing as runners-up were David Harrop and Jamie Herring from Weymouth Golf Club with 44 points, followed in third place by Chris Ward and Alan Gilbert of Aberdovey, also with 44 points, who lost out on the back 9.

We were delighted to have recently welcomed Rick Shiels to Aberdovey to film the latest video in his Handicap Series:

We were delighted to welcome back members of the British Golf Collectors Society for their annual visit over the weekend of 18-19 April, continuing a long-standing tradition that dates back to the Club’s centenary year in 1992.

Festivities began on Friday with a number of Society members enjoying a warm-up round at Borth & Ynyslas, before attention turned to Saturday’s main event – the foursomes match against the Club for the Darwin Trophy. Played in classic links conditions of sunshine and a lively breeze, the contest featured 13 matches and showcased the course at its very best. The layout and playing surfaces received widespread praise, with particular thanks due to the Club’s greenkeeping team for their outstanding preparation.

Following the golf, players and guests gathered for an excellent evening of dining, with the Club’s catering and bar teams earning well-deserved recognition. Speeches from Nick Wright and BGCS Captain Nigel Notley were warmly received, while Philip Truett, one of the original organisers of the fixture, delivered his customary entertaining summary of the day’s play. Despite his spirited efforts to frame the result otherwise, Aberdovey secured victory by 13 holes up to 9 holes up.

Sunday saw 46 players take to the course for the Welsh Hickory Championship, including five Aberdovey members. Played in bright sunshine and light winds, scoring conditions were favourable and reflected in an impressive set of results across the field. Prize winners were as follows:

Aberdovey Golf Club Celebrates National Honour at 2025 Golf Course Awards

Aberdovey Golf Club is proud to announce that it has been named Wales Golf Course of the Year at the 2025 Golf Course Awards. The accolade was presented last week during a prestigious ceremony at Arsenal Football Club’s Emirates Stadium, where leading figures from across the UK and Irish golf industry gathered to celebrate achievement and innovation.

The Golf Course Awards recognise outstanding courses and facilities across the golfing landscape, with a particular focus on progress made over the past 12 months. Judging criteria placed strong emphasis on innovation, sustainability, accessibility, course conditioning, and meaningful contributions to local communities.

Winners were selected by an esteemed panel of judges representing a broad cross-section of the industry. Reflecting on the judging process, Chair of Judges Nick Dougherty (former tour professional and Sky Sports Golf presenter) said: “As judges, we looked for courses and facilities that met every criteria point – those that have improved the playing experience and the overall property, while also taking an active role in their communities through programmes and initiatives that promote inclusivity. All of this year’s winners have succeeded in delivering a first-class experience on and off the course.”
